Feature: I've Been Really Not Okay
Logline: Freshly dumped by her first girlfriend, a people-pleasing programmer must move in with her sloppy stoner sister and navigate defining her sexuality all while surviving toxic startup culture.
Synopsis:
Kiya is your average twenty-something; sexually confused, broke as hell, and in desperate need of therapy. After being dumped by her first girlfriend, she's forced to move in with her sloppy stoner sister turned taxidermist, Kaitlyn.
Things are looking up when Kiya starts her first grown-up job, coding for RenGirl, a colorful tech startup run by even more colorful personalities. However, the joy is short-lived when it's revealed that everyone is subject to a competitive probationary period, and by the end of the month, the group of ten new hires will be whittled down to four.
Kiya quickly befriends Ivy, a fellow RenGirl programmer, but their friendship is soon threatened by Onyx, her over-familiar boss who insists on being Kiya's bestie. Though Kiya would rather just focus on her job, Onyx makes it clear that at RenGirl, being friends is part of the job.
Stretched thin, Kiya struggles to balance work with maintaining her burgeoning friendships, mourning her relationship, parsing out her sexuality, and trying to move the fuck out of her sister's house – the bongs, condoms, and dead animals are starting to get to her.
Tensions rise as Onyx increasingly requires more of Kiya's time both on and off the clock. As Kiya is forced to choose between losing her job or losing herself, she'll learn what it means to make hard decisions and discover that adulting isn’t working late and paying bills – it’s speaking up and choosing yourself, even when it’s hard.
A dark comedy and queer coming-of-age story that would appeal to fans of Insecure and Someone Great.
